The OCR Crew

What’s up Crew,

Some races are about mountains.
Some are about mud.

And then you got races like Fayetteville

Flat.
Fast.
A little Rainy.
A little Chilly.
And nowhere to hide.

After three stops (Jacksonville → Palm Beaches → Fayetteville), the Spartan South National Series wrapped up this weekend.

I caught up again with Paul Massey, who just locked in 3rd place at Fayetteville AND 3rd overall in the Series.

Let’s get into it.

MAIN STORY of the WEEK
📜 Paul Massey Delivers When it Counts

The Start of the Beast Race in Fayetteville

A month ago, Paul told us he was building toward Fayetteville with:

  • ~65mile weeks

  • Longer workouts (16-18miles)

  • A focus on endurance for a fast Beast

He hit it. And it showed.

I had a quick follow-up with him after the Race.

About his Training: Did it pay off?

“Everything went to plan… low 60 mile weeks before a small taper. Those 16–18-mile workouts really prepared my legs for how fast and flat the course was.”

👉 Translation: if you’re racing fast courses… you better train like it’s a road race with obstacles.

On his Fueling: For a ~2Hour Spartan Beast?

“I fueled with 4 packs of 30g carb Amacx gels. I opted out of bringing any hydration knowing it was going to be a fast course.”

Bold move… but on a flat, fast course, less weight = more speed.

On his Race Strategy:

“I knew I was a top 3 contender coming into the race but didn't know what was gonna happen. Plan was to stay with the lead pack and open up during the second half to get the best gap coming into the spear thrown, knowing I have yet to hit it all year. Everything went to plan outside of just getting outran by the top 2 guys, losing sight of them less than an hour in.”

It played out very well for him. But… 2 guys just happened to be a little faster than him on that day.

On his Toughest Race in the Series:

“Looking at the series, Palm Beaches was the toughest for me. I focus more on longer distances and never enjoyed the shorter faster races. Went out way to hot and blew up as well as missing spear, taking me out of the top 3.”

That’s OCR in a nutshell right there.

Not the hills.
Not the distance.

The Execution.

One Thing That Stood Out

Flat and fast does NOT mean easy.

Fayetteville proved it again:

  • Constant pressure pace

  • No recovery sections

  • Mistakes = instant time loss

You’re basically redlining… for two hours.

The South Series might have come to an end, but we’ll be seeing Paul at a bunch more Races this year, and he’s always a podium contender wherever he shows up. So be sure to follow him on Instagram here and keep up to date with how it’s going.

Series Wrap-Up 🏁

So the Spartan South National Series is finished up.
How did the final standings shake out?

The OCR Report put together a nice summary.
Check it out.

About Fayetteville (if you missed it)

  • A Hard Rain in the morning 🌧️

  • Light drizzle during the race

  • Was a Fast & Flat Beast course over dirt, pine needles and grass

  • Bunch of obstacles at the finish area, making it cool to spectate at

The OCR Report had full live coverage (tape-delayed Monday):

  • Commentary: Tyler Movsessian & Miles Keller

  • Solid breakdowns + some chaotic obstacle moments (as always)

👉 Worth the watch if you want to see how the race actually unfolded.

🛠️ Product Shoutout

Last week I talked with Joe Rucco and his awesome performance at the New Jersey Ultra, and he mentioned taking the Neversecond gels and how he was a big fan of them.
I’ve never personally tried these out but will be picking some up soon to test out 🤞

Until next time,
Paul @The.OCR.Crew
