The OCR Crew

What’s up Crew,

With World’s Toughest Mudder about 6 weeks out, the internet is doing what it always does:

Overanalyzing everything.

Gear lists.
Lap plans.
Sleep schedules.

But if you’ve been around OCR long enough, you know the truth:

Most people don’t fail WTM because they weren’t prepared…

They fail because they made a few very predictable mistakes.

Let’s touch on 5 big ones.

MAIN STORY of the WEEK
📰 WTM: 5 Mistakes that Screw up Your Race

Been Talking Spartan NS a bunch lately.
Time to switch that up into WTM Mode!

🧠 1. Going Out Way Too Hot

This is the classic.

Adrenaline is high, music is pumping, and suddenly your “easy pace” turns into race pace.

Feels great… for 2 or 3 laps.

Then it hits:

  • Legs blow up early

  • Heart rate never settles

  • You’re already digging a hole by midnight

The people who last, treat the first few hours like a warm-up.

If it doesn’t feel almost too easy, you’re doing it wrong.

Don’t. Go. Out. Too. Hot.

⏱️ 2. Spending Way Too Long in the Pit

This one kills races quietly.

You come in thinking:
“I’ll just warm up for a minute.”

Then:

  • Change socks

  • Eat a little

  • Check your phone

  • Sit down “for a second”

Next thing you know… 25 minutes gone.

Multiply that by a few laps and your race is basically over.

👉 Strong WTM racers are efficient, not comfortable.

🧦 3. Gear Mistakes (That Seem Small… Until They’re Not)

This is where Reddit is full of horror stories:

  • Brand new shoes → instant blisters

  • Wrong socks → trench foot by lap 3

  • Headlamp dies → mentally cooked

  • Overcomplicated gear bins → chaos at night

One of the biggest?

Wetsuits.

People either:

  • Don’t bring one and freeze

  • Or spend WAY too long putting it on/off

Remember guys: You should bring a wetsuit to WTM. And you should probably put it on a little before you feel like you need it.

🍌 4. Messing Up Fueling Early

Another sneaky race killer.

People either:

  • Don’t eat enough early (because they “feel fine”)

  • Or wait until they’re already drained

By the time you realize it, it’s too late.

Energy crashes hard around the overnight hours.

Remember the Simple rule guys: eat before you need it.
Even when you don’t feel like it.

🧠 5. Waiting to “Feel Ready” Again

This might be the biggest one.

You come into the pit tired, cold, maybe a little beat up.

And you think:
“I’ll go back out when I feel better.”

That moment almost never comes.

The longer you sit, the harder it is to restart.

WTM is about going back out when you don’t feel ready.

That’s the whole game guys.

⚡ Your Final Takeaway

Everyone obsesses over the perfect setup.

But the people who do well?

They:

  • Keep moving

  • Keep it simple

  • Don’t let small mistakes turn into race-ending ones

It’s not flashy.

It’s just tough.
